Canada Pulls Out of the Kyoto Protocol

Canada will formally withdraw from the Kyoto Protocol on climate change, the country’s minister of the environment has said. Peter Kent said the protocol “does not represent a way forward for Canada.”

This was the year that Canada’s Conservative Party finally won an outright governing majority, making a move like this possible. But given that Canada wasn’t meeting its targets, what choice do they have? And who’s optimistic about a Kyoto successor being agreed upon by the deadline, one year from now?
