Newt Idea Watch: Drug Tests for Government Benefits

Chris Moody gets Newt Gingrich talking about all matter of things, and gets this trailer for a “comprehensive drug policy” to be unveiled soon.

I think that we need to consider taking more explicit steps to make it expensive to be a drug user. It could be through testing before you get any kind of federal aid. Unemployment compensation, food stamps, you name it.

He says this in Naples, Florida, the home of Gov. Rick Scott, who has pioneered the state’s program of drug tests for welfare recipients. The state has been paying for the the $30 drug tests. If you extend that to everyone currently on unemployment benefits, you’re paying $105 million for tests.
