The CNN/ORC survey of 1,036 “adults,” taken from November 11 to 13, is the first truly horrendous poll we’ve seen for Herman Cain. The headline: Newt Gingrich has absorbed his support and moved into a solid second place. The reason: Herman Cain has been hobbled by his scandal. I’ll just break out the key results, which CNN has packaged next to results during Clarence Thomas’s travails.
This was what I feared for Cain at the start of the scandal. The conservative base had no reason to abandon Thomas, and lots of reasons to stick with him. The conservative base of 2011 has other candidates it can support if Cain disappoints them.
