The Sad Drama of the Payroll Tax Cut

If you missed it in between placing sandbags outside your basement apartment or punching your neighbor in the face for the last Gatorade at Safeway, my newest piece is about the saga of the payroll tax cut. Republicans have always liked it, because they like tax cuts, and they like the idea of showing people what the world with lower FICA taxes is like. Democrats were late converts to it, because it’s one of the only stimulative ideas they can get passed anymore. That doesn’t explain how we got here, with Democrats thinking they can score points on hypocritical Republicans and somehow win over a public that’s given up on Washington.
