Tax the Poor

My new piece looks into how and why Bachmann, Perry and Huntsman have adopted a line that used to be reserved for conservative pundits – you know, people who didn’t have to face voters. They’re saying the problem with tax rates is that 47 percent of people have dropped off the tax rolls, not that the people who pay the highest taxes aren’t paying enough. (One factor I didn’t really get into, though it’s in the links, is that the current code allows some very wealthy people to pay less than peope making less than $50,000.)
