Social Conservative Cover for Trump

Savannah Guthrie stumped Donald Trump on a question that’s not all that tough for pro-life activists: Is there a right to privacy in the Constitution?

GUTHRIE: Is there a right to privacy in the Constitution?

TRUMP: I guess there is. I guess there is.

GUTHRIE: So –

TRUMP: Why, just out of curiosity, do you ask that question?

GUTHRIE: Well, I`m just wondering how that squares with your pro-life views.

TRUMP: Well, it`s a pretty strange way of getting to pro-life. I mean, it`s a very unique way of asking about pro-life. Why are you – what does that have do with privacy? How are you equating pro-life with privacy?

GUTHRIE: Well, you know about the Roe v. Wade decision.

TRUMP: Yes, sure. Look, I am pro-life.

That’s a horrible answer! That should kill off Trump as a credible candidate for social conservatives, shouldn’t it? Except this is what Franklin Graham told Christiane Amanpour, two days later.

Donald Trump, when I first saw that he was getting in, I thought, well, this has got to be a joke. But the more you listen to him, the more you say to yourself, you know, maybe this guy’s right.

How long can Trump inhabit this sweet spot where he gives constant interviews and none of them penetrate with people?
