The Power of Drudge

Last night I talked a bit about the resilience of birtherism on The Last Word with Lawrence O’Donnell , but I forgot to mention one of yesterday’s key conspiracyverse developments. In the morning, the Drudge Report teased a scoop about a new book that would “REVEAL OBAMA’S ‘TRUE’ IDENTITY.” (There was a question mark after “identity,” of course.) The tease was for one of the site’s occasional exclusives, which looked remarkably like a press release for Jerome Corsi’s new book Where’s the Birth Certificate?

The street date is a LONG month away, and author Jerome Corsi, the man who torpedoed John Kerry’s presidential dreams with SWIFT BOAT, has gone underground and is holding his new findings thisclose.

“It’s utterly devastating,” reveals a source close to the publisher. “Obama may learn things he didn’t even know about himself!”

If a book’s publisher says a book is good, you know a book… is being published. And Drudge’s tease, which led the site for most of a slow domestic news day, resulted in this:

Corsi’s book is being published by WorldNetDaily, whose founder and editor Joseph Farah is one of the savviest people in conservative new media. The book has been teased by countless exclusives from Corsi and a short TV ad that might have gotten more coverage on liberal news sites than TV channels.
