I just got off the phone with Kim Simack, who’s on the road to Madison, Wis. to deliver the Recall Jim Holperin committee’s petitions. Holperin was one of the 14 Democratic senators who fled the state to slow down the budget repair bill, and Simack is confident that conservatives will force a recall election.
“We have around 21,000 signatures,” she said. “We needed 15,960. So we have a little bit to play with here.”
The Holperin race gained a little bit of infamy last month , after a rally in support of the recall got ugly and one petition paper, with signatures, was destroyed.
“After that, the volunteer effort really started to surge,” said Simack, who describes herself as horse trainer and a patriotic author of children’s books. “That was too much for people. There was never a lull. And I want to thank these 14 AWOL senators who left the state, because they absolutely engaged the citizens of Wisconsin to stay involved.”
The petitions will be delivered at 10:30 tomorrow morning. This would be the fifth official recall attempt of 2011, and the first against a Democrat.
