The Quest for an Alternate CPAC

WorldNetDaily runs a promo piece for The Awakening , a religious-themed conservative conference happening next month, grabbing sponsorship from some of the groups that boycotted CPAC over the high-level involvement by libertarian and gay Republican groups. WND oversexes the story just a little – the conference, held at Liberty University, was held last year, in the pre-CPAC protest era.

The tentative schedule kicks off with a speech by Planned Parenthood stinger Lila Rose (“Exposing Planned Parenthood and Sex Trafficking”) and a luncheon with Newt Gingrich. The “invited speakers” include a couple of people who passed on CPAC – Marco Rubio, Mike Pence – and activists who represent the “anti-Sharia” movement such as Brigitte Gabriel and Frank Gaffney. Also on the list: Ryan Sorba, who won an odd kind of fame in 2010 for sparring with Ron Paul supporters and GOProud from the CPAC stage and taunting that “the lesbians at Smith College boo louder than you.”

People for the American Way’s Right Wing Watch has been covering this for months ; it’s extremely clever of WND to cover it with the “want an alternative to CPAC?” hook.
