Not to push theanalogy too far, but at times he reminds me of “IT,” the brain onthe planet Camazotz in Madeleine L’Engle’s AWrinkle in Time . One gets the impressionObama would be perfectly happy if all of us bounced our basketballsin unison – in “mechanistic synchronicity,” as the Wikipedia entryput it – with his aim being “to enforce absolute conformity…, withthe claimed benefit of eliminating war, unhappiness andinefficiency.”
Again, the analogy should not be pushed too far: This isnot to suggest that Obama, like IT, is evil, but only that he seemsin a rather bloodless way to want a society that marches to auniform beat, dictated by supposed cognoscenti from above.
The gap between conservative and liberal opinion about Obama today is several oceans wide, isn’t it? In the midst of a historic and unprecedented knuckle-under to conservatives on taxes, one that has liberals talking about ways to punish the president in 2012, the conservative line on Obama remains that he is a dedicated socialist who can only be understood with ever-grimmer and more frightening analogies. A president “IT” would probably favor no tax rate compromise.
