Gay GOP Group: Democrats Should Challenge O’Donnell on Gay Remarks

Greg Sargent has excavated a Christine O’Donnell quote from 2006 – not from her high school days, from when she was mounting her first Senate campaign – that puts her in the Exodus International camp on gay issues.

People are created in God’s image. Homosexuality is an identity adopted through societal factors. It’s an identity disorder.

I’d noticed that Chris Barron, chairman of the board of the gay Republican group GOProud, was among the conservatives saying that O’Donnell would be better off running on economics than going down the “social issue rabbit hole.”

“Here is what I would love to see – someone actually ask Christine O’Donnell if she stands by statements like this, instead of the failed Castle/DSCC approach of attacking her personal financial problems,” said Barron. “I think Christine O’Donnell has made a lot of statements that are troubling to gay conservatives, and should be considered troubling to all conservatives. I would love for O’Donnell to either defend these statements or tell us that her opinions have matured and changed. Maybe the smear machine at the DSCC is afraid that actually challenging O’Donnell on statements like this will make them look too gay-friendly.”

I’ve contacted an O’Donnell spokesman, and for what it’s worth the DNC blasted out the Sargent post to reporters, but no other statements have come out yet.
