In 1872 Charles Darwin published The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals, which showed that the same facial expressions and basic gestures occur in human populations all over the world, concluding that those traits are innate.
Update, June 12, 2013: The study providing new evidence that the origins of language can be found in gestures was published in the open-access journal Frontiers in Psychology.
