Instagram Walks Back Proposed Changes

The uproar over Instagram’s new terms of service continues over language suggesting users’ photos could be used as advertisements within the photo-sharing social network.

The backlash was immediate—users threatened to leave the service, blogs offered instructions on how to delete your account forever, and Flickr reminded everyone that “At Flickr, your photos are always yours.”

Instagram co-founder Kevin Systrom quickly walked back the proposed change, saying “We do not have plans for anything like this and because of that we’re going to remove the language that raised the question.”

Slate’s Will Oremus, meanwhile, notes that the new terms of service would have been virtually identical to current user agreements for Twitter and YouTube.
