Google Maps Already No. 1 Free iPhone App

Here are some turn-by-turn directions for anyone with an iPhone: Click on the app store, turn onto search, find and download Google Maps’ new iOS app—and never look back at Apple Maps.

After being unceremoniously dumped from iOS6 nearly three months ago, Google has released its popular mapping program back onto the Apple Store, saving iPhone users from the widely ridiculed Apple Maps.

Apple CEO Tim Cook offered a rare apology for the app, which saw misplaced landmarks, overlooked towns, and a warning this week from Australian police, who called Apple Maps “life threatening” after its directions misled people by 44 miles into a sweltering, remote desert.

Just hours after its release, Google Maps was already No. 1 among free iPhone apps.
