Watch Out, ISPs: Google Fiber Preps Home Service in Kansas City

Kansas City—both the Kansas side and the Missouri side—is about to become the next proving grounds for Google’s latest experiment.

After much anticipation, the company is finally beginning home installation of its new Fiber Internet service. In a blog post, Google told customers in local “Fiberhoods” to expect a quick process that includes an in-home appointment to enable service.

Not content just to beat out other Internet service providers in speed—which clocks in at a blistering 700 Mbps over an Ethernet connection—the company is also promising courteous, on-time service. (In one very Google touch, technicians will carry vacuums to clean up any mess they leave behind.) If Google can deliver on that, too, cable companies should indeed be worried.
