NFL Replacement Refs Feel the Wrath of Twitter

NFL replacement referees are being called out again for incompetence after Monday night’s Seahawks/Packers game. Seattle beat Green Bay on a desperation last-second touchdown pass that clearly looked like an interception. One ref ruled it a touchdown, one did not, and the touchdown was upheld after a lengthy review in a decisive play that former NFL coach Jon Gruden called both “tragic” and “comical.” He wasn’t alone. Twitter exploded in a sea of outrage against the refs, summed up by Hall of Fame quarterback Troy Aikman who tweeted: “These games are a joke.”

The first three weeks of the NFL season have been marred by bad calls, as the NFL continues to lock out its regular refs in a labor dispute. The Associated Press notes that many see the chaos on the field as “substitute teacher syndrome”: See how much you can get away with before the real thing returns.
