Broadcast gaming has found a home on Twitch, and Twitch has raised $15 million to continue building that community.
Started as a small but dedicated group of gamers on Justin.TV who enjoyed watching each other play, Twitch has grown into a platform with over 20-million regular viewers. Site visitors can watch channels based on games such as Starcraft II, Diablo III, and World of Warcraft, with commentators providing feedback in real time.
The new cash infusion will allow Twitch to hire more engineers to improve the site’s quality. “Our current team has put us at the forefront of the live videogame streaming movement,” Twitch CEO Emmett Shear said, “and we can now invest aggressively to support our growing community with new ways to stream, watch, and chat.”
Kind of like ESPN meets YouTube without any off-season breaks in the action.
