The end of an era is truly upon us, as the shuttle Endeavour, the fifth and final space-worthy NASA shuttle to be built, makes its way to a Los Angeles museum.
Weather has delayed Endeavour’s cross-country trip from Florida, but the spacecraft is scheduled to arrive Friday in Los Angeles. People will get a chance to view the shuttle at the California Science Center and when it is paraded through the city’s streets on Oct. 12.
Endeavour was commissioned in 1987 to replace Challenger, which was lost in an explosion after lift-off in 1986. Named for the British HMS Endeavour, which took Captain James Cook on his first voyage of discovery, the shuttle first flew in May 1992 and retired after its 25th flight in May 2011. It spent a total of 296 days, 3 hours, 34 minutes, and 2 seconds in space, travelling a combined distance of 122,883,151 miles.
