Was Jesus Married? Early Christian Text Discovery Reopens Debate

Maybe there’s some truth to The Da Vinci Code after all.

Harvard Divinity School professor Karen L. King has announced the discovery of an apparently authentic 4th-century fragment of papyrus that shows early Christians believed Jesus had a wife. The Gnostic gospels that inspired Dan Brown’s thriller insinuated that Jesus was married to Mary Magdalene.

The new scrap of Coptic text includes the phrase, “Jesus said to them, ‘my wife.’ ”

King believes the text doesn’t prove Jesus was married but shows the intense debate early Christians had surrounding sexuality and marriage. Modern day Christians ardently believe Jesus was unmarried.

The debate surrounding this finding is far from over but we can already imagine Dan Brown gearing up to pen his next novel.
