Her single-mom story may be familiar to the hardcore “Beliebers” out there, but now we have a more complete picture of Justin Bieber’s mother.
In a new memoir entitled Nowhere But Up, Pattie Mallette reveals her past struggles with sexual abuse, drug abuse, and attempted suicide. And she recounts her decision not to abort Bieber when she became pregnant at 17.
Speaking about the memoir, Mallette said, "I wanted to be as vulnerable as I could, so that young girls who have been through similar things could relate. I pretty much bared my soul."
Mallette credits much of her recovery to a spiritual awakening she had after being visited by a Christian counselor in a psychiatric ward following a suicide attempt.
When she became pregnant with Bieber, she was encouraged to abort the baby due to her age and circumstances. But in an interview with Kathie Lee Gifford airing this week on the Today Show, Mallette said that wasn't an option she could consider.
