Amid all the rumors about the specs and features of the new iPhone, here’s one thing you can take to the bank: you won’t find a YouTube icon on the home screen. Instead, users will have to download a new YouTube app, which landed in the app store today.
For those who have come to love streaming piano-playing cats on their iPhones will have to take the extra step of finding and adding the app. But the upside for YouTube is that it can now control and serve its own mobile ads.
About a billion YouTube videos are streamed on cell phones every day, which is a quarter of all YouTube traffic.
The new YouTube app promises access to tens of thousands more videos than the previous Apple version, including hits like Lady Gaga’s official videos. It also boasts more sophisticated search and a swipe feature to view the channel guide.
The app will work on iPads, but YouTube says it’s planning to release a version that is optimized for the iPad’s larger screen, so stay tuned.
