Fans Celebrate Elvis Presley on 35th Anniversary of “The King’s” Death

He may have died long before Twitter and Facebook—but Elvis Presley and his classic music will likely be heard and remembered all over the Internet today.

Presley died Aug. 16, 1977 at the age of 42, and 35 years later he still holds on to chart-topping records. The King had over 100 hits on Billboard’s Hot 100, and a whopping 124 albums that charted on the Billboard 200—including a fan-picked compilation that hit number 137 just last week.

Today the artist is being celebrated by a vigil of thousands at Graceland in Memphis, Tenn., alongside a Presley first: an appearance by both Lisa Marie Presley and the early rock ‘n’ roll star’s former wife, Priscilla.

Another pop star is being celebrated today for a different reason—chart-topper Madonna turns 54 years old, despite what her years of Pilates and some surgery might suggest. Whether you’re into the Material Girl or the King, it’s a good day to make a Spotify playlist of all number ones!
