Will Ted Cruz’s Prime Time GOP Convention Speaking Spot Appease the Tea Party?

Will Tea Party conservatives and Sarah Palin lovers be appeased by a Canadian with a Cuban last name?

The Romney campaign thinks so; newly minted Texas Republican candidate for senate Ted Cruz has been booked for a prime-time speaking spot during Tampa’s National Republican Convention.

CNN reports that Cruz will speak at the GOP main event along with other rising Republican stars, including Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi, and Puerto Rico Gov. Luis Fortuno—whose support for Romney was doubly solidified when then-candidate Rick Santorum suggested the commonwealth needed to declare English as its official language.

Cruz, a former solicitor general in the Lone Star State, recently won a primary upset against establishment candidate Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst, with the help of conservatives like Sarah Palin and Sen. Jim DeMint. His appearance on the stage in Tampa is a hat tip to the Tea Party in a GOP with growing divisions. It’s also an opportunity for bigger things—if history is any indication.
