Apparently, having her 6-year-old daughter commit to a 1-billion year pledge of service to Scientology was the last straw for Katie Holmes.
TMZ is reporting that Holmes filed for divorce from husband Tom Cruise after becoming convinced that he planned to send their daughter Suri off to the Sea Org, a hardcore organization of Scientologists often compared to a boot camp. Scientologists as young as 5 can reportedly be sent without their parents to serve Sea Org at the church’s Gold Base Headquarters in California.
In a 2011 article in the New Yorker, Lawrence Wright suggested Sea Org’s activities amounted to little more than forced child labor.
