If you answered “so tell me what you want what you really-really want” with “a Spice Girls musical,” then your prayers have been answered. All five original Spice Girls appeared this week at a central London hotel to announce Viva Forever!, a new musical based on the quintet's chart-topping songs.
Set to premiere at London’s Piccadilly Theater on Dec. 11, the musical is notably written by comedian Jennifer Saunders, creator and star of the beloved cult BBC sitcom Absolutely Fabulous. The upcoming musical follows a beautiful girl who is swept up in the obsession of TV celebrity culture—ripe territory for Saunders’ brand of acerbic pop culture-skewering humor.
Viva Forever! may join Momma Mia!, Rock of Ages, and Jersey Boys—blockbuster musicals based on pop stars’ song books. Soon, the Jukebox musical will be just another step in the superstar progression, right after Concept album and Greatest Hits Vol. 2.
