Joe the Plumber Ad: Gun Control Led to the Holocaust

MENTOR, OH - OCTOBER 30: Samuel ‘Joe the Plumber’ Wurzelbacher addresses a campaign rally with Republican presidential nominee Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) in the gymnasium at Mentor High School October 30, 2008 in Mentor, Ohio. With less than a week before the U.S. presidential election, McCain launched a two-day bus tour of the swing state of Ohio, where some polls show his opponent, Democratic presidential nominee Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) leading by nine points.

Joe Wurzelbacher, aka Joe the Plumber, may be veering into Herman Cain territory. The Ohio Republican has released a surreal campaign ad that links gun control to, wait for it, the Holocaust.

The ad opens with Wurzelbacher loading a shotgun while lamenting what gun control can do:

“In 1939, Germany established gun control. From 1939 to 1945, 6 million Jews and 7 million others, unable to defend themselves, were exterminated.”

And after he blows away a tomato, Wurzelbacher proclaims, “I love America.”

Not surprisingly, the National Jewish Democratic Council called the ad beyond the pale and called on Joe the Plumber to apologize.

Wurzelbacher’s response: “Unfortunately, there are a lot of whiners out there.” Which may energize his Tea Party base, but probably won’t play well in the heavily Democratic district where he’s mounting his long-shot bid to unseat veteran Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur.
