Fiona Apple Releases First Album in Seven Years

Beloved and enigmatic chanteuse Fiona Apple has emerged from a seven year hiatus, releasing her fourth studio album today, titled (get ready), The Idler Wheel Is Wiser Than the Driver of the Screw and Whipping Cords Will Serve You More Than Ropes Will Ever Do.

The album has been met with nearly universal critical acclaim, eliciting gushing reviews from Pitchfork, Spin, NME, Entertainment Weekly, and many other barometers of taste.

Brimming with Apple’s signature idiosyncratic, raw and confessional jazz-pop, Idler Wheel is called “nothing short of a vocal master class” according to Pitchfork’s Ryan Dombal, who also asserts “She’s able to convey more with a quick, original turn of phrase … than many pop stars are able to muster with 100-foot screens and volcano pyrotechnics.” Take that Gaga.

But will it sell? Apple began a two-month promotional tour with a secret show at New York’s Standard Hotel last night. If you’re a fan, catch her live now. Patterns suggest the reclusive artist might not appear again until 2019.
