They both assumed the seat of power with the help of birthright, so what did George W. Bush do to anger King Joffrey?

Season 1 of HBO’s Game of Thrones apparently features a severed head bearing a striking resemblance to the 43rd President. During the DVD commentary, show creators chuckle about using the likeness, saying it’s not a political statement—just a shortage of fake severed heads.

After a post about it went viral online, HBO issued an apology, as did the producers, who again claimed it was about cost, not politics.

This isn’t the first time Bush has been depicted dead in film—2006 mockumentary Death of a President told of a successful assassination. And there’s Futurama’s Nixon and Gore disembodied heads.

Is it a real controversy? Game of Thrones is well known for delivering violence to anyone and everyone, no matter how important. Some might argue “you win or you die” echoes Bush II’s foreign policy mantra. And with 68 percent of real world Americans still blaming the former president for our poor economy, it may not be a stretch to imagine residents of King’s Landing yelling “off with his head!”
