Miss USA Olivia Culpo of Rhode Island: Cello-Playing, Transgender-Supporting Nerd

Miss USA 2012 has been crowned in Las Vegas, and she’s a cello playing nerd! Who also looks like a beauty queen, of course.

Olivia Culpo of Rhode Island will take a year off from her studies at Boston University to fulfill duties as Miss USA. She said she was short and chubby as a girl, spending her summers at band camp after learning to perform on the cello, which she has played at Symphony Hall in Boston and Carnegie Hall in New York City.

Perhaps her geek experience also made the new Miss USA more tolerant toward people from all walks of life. During the interview round, Culpo was asked if it would be fair to award the Miss USA title to a transgender woman over a natural-born woman, referring to the recent Miss Universe Canada pageant that originally excluded contestant Jenna Talackova. Culpo immediately voiced her support, saying, “I do think that would be fair … because I believe it’s a free country.”

Another pageant winner proving beauty can be on the inside and out in one person. What say you to that, Miss California 2009?
