Up, out, and away. DC Comics has officially announced Alan Scott, the original Green Lantern, is back as the latest gay superhero.
Rebooted as a younger version of his Golden Age counterpart as part of DC’s ongoing relaunch of superhero titles, Scott’s sexuality won’t be a prominent storyline.
Writer James Robinson told the New York Post, “He’s very much the character he was. He’s still the pinnacle of bravery and idealism. He’s also gay.”
Robinson wanted to show gays “in a positive light for people who might be a little more small-minded.” No doubt he was referencing anti-gay groups like One Million Moms, who protested the announcement.
With characters from Archie to Marvel having come out this past year, it’s not hard to imagine others leaving the closet soon.
