The band Against Me! is getting a female lead singer without changing their lineup.
Tom Gabel, the lead singer for the popular Florida-born punk alternative band, comes out as transgender in this week’s issue of Rolling Stone, and announces plans to become a woman through hormonal therapy and electrolysis treatments.
Gabel—who will take the name Laura Jane Grace—will remain married to wife Heather, and went public with the news in the hopes of growing awareness about gender dysphoria.
“I’m going to have embarrassing moments,” says Gabel in the Rolling Stone feature, “and that won’t be fun. But that’s part of what talking to you is about—is hoping people will understand, and hoping they’ll be fairly kind.”
Known for songs like Thrash Unreal and I Was a Teenage Anarchist, Gabel’s band will embark on a U.S. and European tour this year.
