Cruising the Las Vegas strip now comes with the option of having nobody behind the wheel.
Nevada has become the first state to issue a license for a driverless car—a Toyota Prius outfitted with Google’s autonomous vehicle technology.
A person behind the wheel and a person in the passenger seat are still required for the car’s testing, which thus far has included a ride down Sin City’s famous main drag. But with artificially intelligent software, a GPS, and a host of sensors for navigation, the tech giant hopes to get ahead of competitors and market their wares to automakers soon.
According to the Nevada Department of Motor Vehicle representatives, the driverless car will feature red plates fitted with an infinity symbol—representing quote, “the car of the future.” So driverless cars may not be far off in Nevada. Now, if we can just find a way to get machines to wait in line for us at the DMV.
