A woman’s texting habit had her strolling off a pier into a river channel that turns into Lake Michigan this week, and emergency personnel were called to fish her and her rescuing husband out of the water.

Bonnie Miller came forward to the press to raise awareness about the dangers of texting while walking after trying to thumb out an appointment time sent her strolling into space off the south pier in St. Joseph, Mich. Her husband and her 15-year-old son jumped to the rescue, but emergency personnel were called to fish the sheepish texter out of the water.

All long-walk-off-a-short-pier jokes aside, Miller says she hopes people will take this as a lesson. “I’m so grateful to be alive,” she said. “I have a new lease on life.” She’ll need a new phone now, too.
