If you’re about to type in Apple.com and pre-order a new iPad, don’t bother. Instead, pack a thermos and a sleeping bag and head to your local store, because pre-orders for the company’s new tablet are already sold out.

Demand for the latest iPad, with its high-definition screen, 4G network connectivity, and moderately updated hardware, has already gone far off the charts, according to the company. And that means waiting for three weeks or planning to spend the weekend on the sidewalk.

Partly to blame for the frenzy could be the tablet’s broad rollout, which this time around will happen in Europe and Asia at the same time as North America—promising to be one of the company’s biggest gadget debuts ever. Analysts expect in 2012 alone the company will double the number of iPads it has sold to date.

Apple-fan demand can get ugly. The company’s iPhone 4S release fail in China made for riots and egg throwing, so line-waiters, bring a poncho!
