2012 Oscar Nominations Favor Hugo, The Artist

Oscar nominations are in! As with every year, there’s a vocal chorus praising surprises and shaking their heads over snubs.

While many expected silent film The Artist to walk away with the most nominations, it was Martin Scorsese’s Hugo that earned the top spot, taking 11 nominations to The Artist’s 10. Gary Oldman’s performance in Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy earned him his first ever Oscar nomination, though the Academy skipped over Leonardo DiCaprio’s portrayal of Hoover in J. Edgar.

As for comedies, no best picture nod for Bridesmaids, but the film did garner a best supporting actress nomination for Melissa McCarthy and an original screenplay nomination for Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo. Other standouts include Tree of Life for best picture and probable shoo-in A Seperation, for the foreign-language film category.

Whew! Now we can all take a break for several weeks before the more important “best and worst dressed” nominations are released.
