Great American Smokeout 2011; Annual Challenge to Kick the Tobacco Habit

Today is the American Cancer Society’s 36th annual Great American Smokeout.

The day calls for the 46 million smokers across the country to quit for 24 hours and challenges them to kick tobacco for good.  And who better to call Americans to action than the supposedly former Smoker-in-Chief himself.

In a taped message, the president said, “The fact is quitting smoking is hard, believe me, I know.”

A 2009 law signed by President Obama calls for more graphic labels on cigarettes—though a federal court recently blocked the measure, which was aimed at reducing the 443,000 smoking-related deaths in the United States each year.
