Semper Fi is trending on the 236th birthday of the U.S. Marine Corps.
The Marines trace their roots back to the very foundation of America, when Captain Samuel Nicholas, under a resolution from the Continental Congress, formed two battalions of Marines on Nov. 10, 1775.
Since that time, the Marine Corps has evolved to become the dominant practitioner of amphibious warfare. Operating under the slogan “The Few, The Proud,” and forever remembered for planting the American Flag on Iwo Jima during the Pacific campaign of World War II, today there are approximately 200,000 Marines on active duty. Ooh-rah.
