Since that time, the Marine Corps has evolved to become the dominant practitioner of amphibious warfare. Operating under the slogan “The Few, The Proud,” and forever remembered for planting the American Flag on Iwo Jima during the Pacific campaign of World War II, today there are approximately 200,000 Marines on active duty.
