istrending because the infamous Boston mob boss James “Whitey” Bulgerhas finally been taken into FBI custody.
One of the FBI’s Top 10 most wanted, Bulger was theinspiration for the character portrayed by Jack Nicholson in the 2006 MartinScorsese movie. He was tracked down in Santa Monica, Calif., this week after 16years on the lam.
The 81-year-old Bulger is charged with 19 counts of murderalong with a range of mob-related crimes, including money laundering andnarcotics distribution.
As The Departed suggests, Bulger was also an FBI informant for a number of years, giving him alevel of immunity that authorities claim he used effectively toorchestrate criminal enterprises with little risk.
