Thedate commemorates the day in 1777 that the Second Continental Congress adoptedthe flag of the United States, which may or may not have been designed by BetsyRoss.
Theidea for Flag Day is attributed to BJ Cigrand, a schoolteacher from Wisconsinwho organized his students on June 14, 1885, to celebrate the “Flag Birthday.”
Theconcept spread until President Woodrow Wilson officially established theholiday in 1916.
