Born Robert Zimmerman on May 24, 1941, Dylan’s politically tinged folk songs made him a leading figure in American counterculture during the 1960s. He has continued to defy pop-music conventions, finding inspiration in rock, folk, blues, country, even jazz.
With dozens of albums released since his 1962 debut, it’s impossible to note all the contributions Dylan has made to American music, but the Village Voice once said it well: “Elvis might never have been born, but someone else would surely have brought the world rock ’n’ roll. No such logic accounts for Bob Dylan.”
