Brigham Young University basketball standout Brandon Davies istrending after news of his suspension from the team for violating the school’shonor code. His transgression: having sex with his girlfriend. In accordancewith strict Mormon tradition, BYU students are forbidden from having premaritalsex and are expected to live “a chaste and virtuous life.” Under the code, BYUstudents must also abstain from caffeinated and alcoholic beverages, use cleanlanguage, and maintain a high standard of grooming and dress. Davies, a 19-year-oldsophomore, was BYU’s leading rebounder. The team was ranked third in the nationand harbored hopes of making the NCAA Final Four when Davies was dropped fromthe roster.
