Twitter feeds are pulsing on news that FIFA has awarded Qatar the 2022 World Cup. The oil-and-gas-rich Persian Gulf state beat out the U.S., which had enlisted former President Bill Clinton and actor Morgan Freeman in a final push to try to land the world’s most-watched sporting event. This will be the first time an Arab nation plays host to the World Cup. And speaking of firsts, Russia will get its first chance to host a World Cup, having beaten out England, among other European nations, for the 2018 tournament.
