Fiji Water is closing shop in its namesake country.
Fiji’s government, taken over by a military junta in 2006, wants to raise Fiji’s water extraction tax from a third of a penny to 15 cents a liter. Other small water producers pay a tenth of a cent per liter. Fiji Water is the second largest-selling premium bottled water in the United States, after Evian. The shutdown of Fiji Water’s plant is sure to generate confusion among consumers, who will now wonder where exactly Fiji’s water is flowing from. The company says it is still assessing its options for sourcing.
