Here’s the Jermaine Jones Wonder Goal That Saved America’s World Cup

After conceding a terrible opening goal in the first five minutes against Portugal to go down 1-0 in their crucial Group G match, the United States went into the second half needing another miracle. They got it in the form of Jermaine Jones’ magic right foot. With less than 30 minutes left to play, the ball rebounded to Jones off of a corner and he blasted home the equalizer from distance. And all of American Twitter simultaneously went “I believe that we will win!” Seventeen minutes later, Clint Dempsey scored the go-ahead goal and they really started to believe.

Sadly for the U.S., Portugal scored in the final minute of injury time to break American hearts and end the game as a 2-2 draw. But on the bright side, the U.S. earned a crucial point in Group G and are still in a very strong position to go through to the second round. Let’s all just forget that final Silvestre Varela tying goal now, though, and just play the Jones strike on loop.
