After a weekend of picking Twitter fights with the mayor of Puerto Rico’s capital of San Juan from the comfort of his own golf resort in Bedmnister, N.J., President Donald Trump seemed to know exactly what those suffering from the devastation left behind by Hurricane Maria needed: the dedication of a golf trophy. Trump’s offer of goodwill wasn’t just for Puerto Rico though, as the commander in chief also dedicated the Presidents Cup Golf Tournament trophy to the victims of the recent hurricanes that struck Texas and Florida as well.
Of course, this being Trump he also seemingly couldn’t help himself and took the opportunity to (yet again!) praise the government’s response to the natural disasters.
“On behalf of all of the people of Texas, and all of the people—if you look today and see what is happening, how horrible it is but we have it under really great control—Puerto Rico and the people of Florida who have really suffered over this last short period of time with the hurricanes, I want to just remember them,” Trump said at the Liberty National Golf Club in Jersey City. “And we’re going to dedicate this trophy to all of those people that went through so much that we love—a part of our great state, really part of our great nation.”
The commander in chief then went straight to talking about golf again and he praised the victorious U.S. team for their “unbelievable playing.” It marked the first time a sitting president attended the Presidents Cup since Bill Clinton in 2000.
At least one person who attended the trophy ceremony, which included chants of “USA” and the singing of “God Bless America,” wasn’t impressed by the dedication. “You don’t give a shit about Puerto Rico!” someone yelled from the crowd.
