On Tuesday night, President Trump congratulated controversial Republican Senate candidate Roy Moore for his victory in the Alabama Republican primary runoff via Twitter.
On Wednesday morning, he tweeted again.
A Republican president tweeting in support of a Republican Senate nominee is not odd. What’s odd is that Trump had tweeted three times in support of Moore’s defeated opponent, incumbent Sen. Luther Strange, immediately before the primary. And those tweets have now been deleted, according to ProPublica.
“Luther Strange has been shooting up in the Alabama polls since my endorsement,” Trump wrote on Tuesday morning. “Finish the job - vote today for ‘Big Luther.’ ” Trump’s earlier endorsements of Strange, dating back to early August, remain live on his account.
Trump also backed Strange at a Huntsville rally last Friday, during which he told the crowd that he was wary about intervening in a primary. “If Luther doesn’t win, they’re not going to say we picked up 25 points in a very short period of time,” he said of the media. “They’re going to say ‘Donald Trump, the president of the United States, was unable to pull his candidate across the line. It is a terrible, terrible moment for Trump. This is a total embarrassment.’ ”
