With the Cubs leading in the 5th inning of Game 7 of the World Series, the Fox broadcast cut to a dugout conversation between Chicago’s 27-year-old first baseman Anthony Rizzo and 39-year-old catcher David Ross. A transcript:
Ross: Talk to me.
Rizzo: I can’t control myself right now. I’m trying my best.
Ross: It’s understandably so, buddy.
Rizzo: I’m emotional.
Ross: I hear you.
Rizzo: I’m an emotional wreck.
Ross: It’s only going to get worse. Just continue to breathe. That’s all you can do, buddy. That’s all you can do. It’s only going to get worse.
Rizzo: I’m in a glass case of emotion right now.
Ross: Yeah. Yeah. Wait until the ninth with this three-run lead.
With that, Rizzo became the first player since Bill Wambsganss in 1920 to quote Ron Burgundy during a mid-inning World Series interlude.
Ross, who played the role of the cool-headed Brian Fantana in the conversation above, entered the game in the 5th inning. The veteran catcher, who will retire after tonight’s game, proceeded to throw a ball away for an error and let a Jon Lester pitch get away from him, allowing two Cleveland Indians runners to score.
After five innings, the Cubs lead the Indians 5-3. By the beard of Zeus!
Update, 10:09 p.m.: Brian Fantana just homered! Cubs lead 6-3.
