The Times has a story up about the WikiLeaks release of emails hacked from Clinton adviser John Podesta, and it includes this doozy of a passage about proposed campaign slogans:

In one 2014 email exchange with top Clinton aides, Roy Spence, a longtime friend and ad maker for Mrs. Clinton, sent over possible slogans to sum up her candidacy.

“Neither change nor continuity but The different way. The new way,” Mr. Spence wrote. He went on: “She champions with clear vision and grit. We will build not the partisans ships. But rather the Ship of State flying the American Dream flag.”

Solid gold! Why aren’t they using that stuff???

Here’s more about Spence, a Texan who runs an extremely earnest consulting firm called the Purpose Institute and has known Hillary and Bill Clinton since they met on the 1972 McGovern campaign. The Purpose Institute apparently helped Walmart come up with the slogan We Save People Money So They Can Live Better, which was chosen after the company rejected Spence’s first proposal, Walmart Champions With Clear Vision and Will Build Not the Partisans Ships.* Spence is also the author of a book called The 10 Essential Hugs of Life.

*The second part of this sentence is not true.
