Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte is a bit of a piece of work; earlier this summer he encouraged his country’s citizens to carry out vigilante murders of drug dealers. And in speaking about a scheduled meeting with President Obama at the Association of Southeast Asian Nations summit currently being held in Laos, Duterte got so worked up about the mere possibility that Obama might criticize him for the vigilante thing that he called the president of the United States the “son of a whore.” From AFP:
“You must be respectful. Do not just throw away questions and statements. Son of a whore, I will curse you in that forum,” Duterte told a news conference shortly before flying to Laos to attend a summit.
“We will be wallowing in the mud like pigs if you do that to me.”
Mr. Obama had planned to meet Mr. Duterte in Laos, but the White House said early Tuesday that the meeting had been canceled.
Seems fair! Incidentally, Duterte also referred to Pope Francis as the son of a whore in 2015 after a papal visit to Manila created large traffic jams. Whore traffic jams.
