Two hundred and forty years after the United States declared its independence as a country and 96 years after the passage of the Nineteenth Amendment, a woman has become a major party’s nominee for the presidency. At today’s roll call, South Dakota’s delegation formally clinched a majority for Hillary Clinton before Vermont and Bernie Sanders moved to declare her nomination by acclamation. Clinton is now, officially, the Democratic nominee for president.
